It was almost too cold to stop, ten below zero. Morning sunlight had a refractive effect on the frigid crystalline air. The horses were lined up to capture the most sun on their sides and the least wind at their flanks while steam rose from a narrow stream on the far side of the pasture. It was just one of those moments of awe combining light, environment and the wisdom of nature.
